inaugural comp, 1997 - sbmc image

sbmc image THE club's formation club differs little from the origins of other clubs.

When Pete Hayden and I made our annual trip to Crescent Head in 1995, he had decided the time was right to go back to riding mals. At that time, however, I was riding a short board, so that left me a little short-handed, so to speak.

At that time we were staying with a few Ocean Beach guys who surfed mals and they wouldn't allow me to ride my shortboard. One day riding a mal and I was hooked. There was laughter after every wave - that's the way it was when I was a grom! "How good's this Mal riding?"

The trip home that year was a buzz, new Mal on car, shortboard left in the house for whoever wanted it. Then Pete said, "Let's start a Mal club!", so we decided the best way to start is to see what others are doing and entered the Cronulla Spring Classic. Nice guys, good times - and they showed us how to get the wheels in motion.

Mick Collins then came on board and the three of us made a trip to the Ocean Beach Boardriders to see how they got it done. Even though those guys got us pissed & broke on the group Keno tickets, (but still a great way for everyone to win a million while having a Mal meeting), they showed us how it could be done. So we thought if this motley crew can run a mal club, so can we. (Thanks OB, really).

We went back to our Mal roots in 1996. We started by telling the odd guy in the water there would be a meeting at the Bateau Bay Pub - then we were telling everyone: If you're interested, tell your mates that we are forming a Malibu Club. Expecting only 15 or so to turn up, 34 came.

The first comp was help in '97/98. It wasn't without its hiccups, but everyone was pulling in the right direction. A successful day was celebrated with a few laughs & beers - a fabulous finale to any comp I believe.

Although all those early members aren't with us now, there is no-one I can't have a friendly chat or laugh with at this club. Some of the guys are brothers of the soul and we all hold them dear & respect them as men & surfers. I know we can count on them ... but all are fun, new & old alike. That's why this is a damn fine club.

And when we stand back & take a look at this big family and how it has grown from those humble beginnings, we see now our sons & daughters surfing with their fathers. We are proud & privileged to be part of it.

Come join us for a very special time!
